Editing Sections and Pages
Q: What is the difference between a section and a page?
Sections divide your website into different parts to categorise the different content on your website. Defining sections is important for the organisation and structure of your website and is essential for creating easy navigation – sections can be assigned to menus and navigation bars [link], and sitemaps [link].
It is important to note that sections do not contain any content (they are not a different type of page), so you cannot navigate to a ‘section’ unless it has it’s own page (i.e. in the example below the software section has its own introductory text and images in the page ‘software’):
Example sitemap [s] = section, [p] = page.
- My website [s]
- Home page [p]
- About Us [p]
- Special Offers [s]
- Special Offers [p]
- Windows XP [p]
- Nintendo Wii [p]
- Products[s]
- Products [p]
- Software [s]
- Software[p]
- Windows XP [p]
- Windows Vista [p]
- Adobe Photoshop [p]
- Fifa 2010 [p]
- Norton Antivirus [p]
- Hardware [s]
- Hardware [p]
- Desktop PCs [p]
- Laptops [p]
- Mp3 players [p]
- Nintendo Wii [p]
- Pricing Options [p]
- Contact Us [p]
Note that the main pages from the example home page are About Us, Special Offers, Products and Contact Us. This section (called ‘my website’) would usually be assigned to a navigation bar at the top or side of the page, for example.
If we click on About Us, it will take us straight to the corresponding page. If we click on Products, it will take us to the first page in that section, which is of course the Products page. Alternatively, when creating a section we can also assign a default page that should appear when somebody navigates to that section.
Q: How do I change the section on a navigation bar?
Click on the [Edit] link at the bottom or end of a navigation bar. Use the drop-down box at the top of the page (“Section to use on page ‘Page Name’”) to select the section that will appear in that navigation bar.
This change will only affect the page you are currently on. If you are creating a new section you will have to set this manually on each of the pages in the section.
Q: Can I use the same page in more than one section?
Yes - for example the same ‘Windows XP’ page is in both the Special Offers and Software Sections.
Q: If I add a new page or subsection to a section will this automatically change in the navigation bars?
Yes.
